
I would enlist the help of somebody else while you are getting to grips with new dreads. I can boxbraid, blanket-stitch braid, cornrow and dread my own hair but crocheting my dreads takes practice, patience, and a lot of arm ache. The purpose of the crochet method is to catch in all those little hairs but it shouldn't be tight so maybe you are pulling too hard.
